A love letter to taking risks

Dear taking risks,

Maybe life is all about you and this “love letter” is going to be pretty random. If I take risks there is a possibility that I’ll win and that it will make me happy. If I lose, I know for a fact that I will be wiser. Even if there is just a very small chance at getting something that will make you happy, risk it! Our life is too short and honestly, happiness is too rare. Some risks might be universally acknowledged, others are defined by you as an individual. My diary this year has the quote “do it with passion, or not at all” on the front. I see and read it every day and to me it is a really great reminder about how we should just go for it, be all in and jump. Why shouldn’t we? Or else why do anything at all.

Taking risks is what shows us that we should stop waiting for the time to be right. Stop waiting until it seems that your life is in a better place. Love now, do what you want to do now and take risks. Try to live your dreams because life’s too short. It all often comes down to the fact that the move you are scared to make might just be the one. Taking risks is something we should enjoy, because cliché but true, we only live once.

Maybe taking a risk is equal to taking chances. In life you should do both, because you never know where they could lead to. You should always remember that everything in life is a risk. Even if you do nothing it is still a risk. So, the choice is up to you. And remember, risk is better than regret. Like Paulo Coelho said: “Never allow waiting to become a habit”. You shouldn’t always play it safe or you’ll die wondering.

Taking risk is part of the process of trying to limit all the times you had to say “if only” in your life. And if you don’t take them, you will always work for someone who does. If you take risks, you’ll gain experience and there is nothing in this world that can substitute experience. There is a big chance that it will lead you to the most unexpected things in life, and they often turn out to be the most beautiful ones.

The same goes for change. Many changes in your life come from taking risks. Yes, it is not always easy and some change might be pretty hard on you, but it will make you stronger, you’ll be in a totally different place in life afterwards, you’ll grow. If you want to move forward, getting too comfortable is your worst enemy. In the end, or at least in this case, comfort is the that holds your back from making progress.

It often seems like you’ll find even more risks you could take in your life if you didn’t take one. I once read the quote that a ship is safe in the harbour, but that that is not what ships are made for. The same goes for you, you are made to live and enjoy life, to take risks, to become who you are meant to be, to live your dreams.

Sometimes I ask myself why are we so afraid to take risks? Is it the unknown that is in front of us? The fear of failure? Is the fact that there is a possibility that you put yourself in a vulnerable position? At first this might sound like it could hurt you or make you weak. However, being vulnerable is truth and courage are two things that might not always be comfortable, but they are never a weakness.

  1. Dear Anna,

This loveletter is very inspiring and you have written a lot of precious thoughts and feelings, which I recognize.
In fact I have to thank you for putting a lot of these valuable remarks on this interesting topic “Taking Risks”.

    Like Thomas Edison once said:
“I have not failed, I have found 10,000 ways that won’t work.”

And one of my favourote Folk Bands, “The Albion Band”, performed a song: “Under the Rose”, in which the singer, Cathy Lesurf sings: “It so hard to know, if you’re bound for a fall, it’s better to have tripped than never danced at all…!”
So that states your Loveletter in which you say that it will be a good experience to try something new and not stuck in the routine of doing what seems safe to you!

Thank you very much, again, for this precious loveletter on “Taking Risks”, Anna.

    Best wishes, Ed.
