A love letter to the light in our life

Dear light,

I hear you thinking ‘Anna, these themes are getting weirder and weirder every time’. Honestly, you might even be right and I don’t blame you. However, I thought about this a little while ago and it is a beautiful theme if you dive deeper. So logical as well in a way. Because light is everywhere in our life even if you might not always see it.

We take it for granted most of the time honestly. I’m not only talking about artificial light that we use on a daily basis. This is also about the natural light that gets less and less this time of year and the light that some people are in our lives. Winter is coming and even though I love Christmastime with all of my heart the darker days have my respect. It is a time of year where we should not only look out for ourselves, but for the people around us as well.

There are so many things in our life that could been seen as ‘light’. Education, love, hope, friendship, guidance, purpose, nature and inspiration are just a couple of things that come to my mind. Light carries a profound metaphorical meaning as well. It might be weird to write about it like this, but it kind of makes us conscious about the fact that one thing can has so many different meanings in our life. Obviously not everything, because for example an apple will most likely always be an apple, but with light for example it is or can be different.

Coming back to these dark days for a little bit. Natural light is so important in our life, I cannot stress it enough. It can honestly be connected to all the other things mentioned above here as well.

Light is often associated with knowledge and enlightenment. The phrase “to see the light” means to gain understanding or insight into a previously unclear or mysterious situation. It represents the moment when ignorance is dispelled, and clarity and wisdom emerge. But there is more. For example, light is also a symbol of hope, optimism, and positivity. A glimmer of light in the darkness can provide solace and motivate people to persevere through difficult times. Think of the idea that “there’s always light at the end of the tunnel”. Light represents the belief that better days are ahead and that challenges can be overcome.

Light is essential for life on Earth as we probably all know. Also metaphorically, it can represent vitality, energy, and the essence of life itself. It often accompanies themes like renewal, growth and the resilience of life.

Yes, life sometimes is dark and so is the winter, but light is often associated with joy and celebration. In life in general, but also in the winter times, Bright lights, fireworks, and candles are used to mark special occasions, to create a cosy surrounding and a festive atmosphere. Simply said, the joy and happiness of life are portrayed!

Lights in the city, lights at home, lights in the tree, the people around me and so much more always remind me about how much ‘light’ I actually have in my life. And how lucky and fortunated I am to have that.

All my love,

Anna

  1. Dear Anna,

This “Love letter” fits in this time of year perfectly; the days are getting shorter and the nights are getting longer, so at home we need to put on the lights rather early…! But you don’t mean in fact this kind of light… In the fifth and sixth paragraph you wrote a number of important things. And it was great to read all this and to take the time to think it over,
Thank you for all your thoughts on this topic, it made me see … the light in the right perspective.
    Sincerely yours,
    Ed.
